Our Outside Visits during 2011

THURSDAY 5th MAY
Afternoon Tour of St. Katherine’s Priory Polsloe including a short history by Peter Edwards
This fascinating building was brought to life by our guide. We were not only shown around the remaing piory, but also givena tour of the grounds to indicate how far the now demolished buildings extended. Refreshments were provided.

THURSDAY 26th MAY
Evening visit to Crediton at the invitation of Crediton Area History and Museum Society including tour of Church and illustrated walk around the town.
Despite rather cold, inclement weather, this visit gave a real insite into Crediton Church and the town. We were shown areas of the town that many don't realise exist, ending with a visit to the Credition Local History museum where we were told about the famous Crediton fire and the ongoing research into the event. An altogether enjoyable, if cold, outing.

THURSDAY 14th JULY
The Two St. Marys - Afternoon visit when Richard Parker will give a short history of both St Mary Arches and St. Mary Steps churches before visiting both of them
This was a succesful event that attracted some 33 peopel including several from the U3A (University of the Third Age). Richard Parker was very knowledgeable in his subject, if a little difficult for those at the back to hear. The visit was ended with the St Mary Step's clock being set in motion. I was able to have access to the room containing the mechanism and videod it. See St Mary Steps Clock video on the Exeter Memories site.

THURSDAY 15th SEPTEMBER
This was an interesting and full guide through the important exhibits at the Bill Douglas Centre. From early visual optical tricks, through the zoetrope and magic lantern to a brief intorduction to the many movie artefacts, posters, programs, toys and 'star' memorabilia relating to modern cinema. The visit was completed by a fascinating talk of the visiting shows to Exeter in the 19th Century and the very first film show at the Victoria Hall in October 1897.

Visit to Coldharbour Mill
We are thinking of organising a visit to Coldharbour Mill. However, we need sufficient interest from members to contemplate booking a visit. If you are interested in seeing a working wool mill along with an exhibition on the First and Second Wars in Devon, please contact Julia Sharp at bradleysharp10@aol.com or phone 01392 213789. The visit will only be arranged if members show sufficient interest, so please contact Julia.
